A cohabitation agreement is a legal agreement reached between a couple who want to live together.  In some cases, they are treated as a couple - for example, when applying for a mortgage or calculating child support.  However, in other cases, such as property rights, inheritance and pensions, they are treated differently to married couples.

A cohabitation agreement is for couples who want to live together but want to protect themselves from the expense and unpleasantness of litigation should their relationship break down.

The agreement is similar to a pre-nuptial agreement , allowing a couple to decide in advance who will keep certain assets and what will happen to assets that have been bought jointly.
